Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of the class, participants will be able to:
Recognize different types of seizures commonly associated with autism
Understand the diagnostic workup for epilepsy
Understand basic approaches to medical treatments
Identify common issues in treatment of children with autism and epilepsy
Recognize signs of refractory epilepsy
Categorize different surgical evaluations for refractory epilepsy
Identify different surgical and non-surgical treatments for refractory epilepsy
Identify common sources of risk for epilepsy patients, including accidents, medication side effects and SUDEP
Biography:
Miya Asato MD
Associate Professor, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh
Dr. Asato is an attending physician in the Divisions of Child Neurology and Child Development at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Psychiatry and has been practicing for over 8 years. Her research focus is on cognitive and behavior issues in pediatric epilepsy. She is also Program Director for the Neurodevelopmental Disabilities Residency program and and Associate Director for Child Neurology Residency program. She is co-director for the LEND Center of Pittsburgh, which is a federally funded training program that provides interdisciplinary training for the next generation of leaders in neurodevelopment disabilities.
Bilal Sitwat MD
Associate Professor, Director of Refractory Epilepsy Clinic, Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh
Dr. Sitwat specializes in treating difficult to control seizures in children with epilepsy. He is actively involved in Epilepsy Surgery Program at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. He is the director of "Refractory Seizures Clinic" at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and is the specialty medical consultant for the Epilepsy Foundation of Western Central Pennsylvania (EFWPA).

This program will provide an introductory overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), scientific research and strengths and needs associated with the diagnosis including communication, social interactions and co-existing conditions. Additional information will include treatment options and a discussion of autism across the lifespan.

Identify the signs and characteristics of autism
Discuss how autism affects the functioning of the brain
List treatment options and interventions used with children and adults diagnosed with autism
Biography:
Norma Farruggia received her MS. Ed. from Buffalo State College in Special Education. She is currently a Behavior Specialist Consultant. She has worked as a classroom teacher, clinical supervisor and special education coordinator.
